Project Lit, 4 Must Read Titles, and Beyond!

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. MNPS Virtual School is a proud participant of Project LIT, a nationwide book club that brings culturally relevant texts into classrooms. This grassroots movement began in Nashville with the visionary leadership of Dr. Jarred Amato and his Maplewood High School students. MNPS Virtual School is excited to join this growing movement. The Project LIT book club meets quarterly, throughout the school year, at our physical school location. So far, students have come together to read and discuss the following must read titles: (1) “Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds, (2) “Refugee” by Alan Gratz, and (3) “The First Rule of Punk” by Celia C. Pérez.

Bringing students out of an online environment and into a classroom setting to discuss literature is a great way to grow strong readers. More, students build relationships with others around the books they love. “It’s great to see students discuss these amazing titles with each other,” says Dr. Zack Barnes, Project LIT Chapter Leader at MNPS Virtual School. “We are building a culture of readers, and that’s on full display during each Project LIT book club meeting.”

The book club is heavily supported by executive leaders at MNPS Virtual School. After seeing strong participation and excitement, Executive Principal, Dr. James Vince Witty, set out to invest and build a school library with middle grades and young adult fiction. Witty notes, “A vibrant library with relevant and relatable books will support and enhance our reading culture.”

“Project LIT is a refreshing addition to our learning community!” notes Assistant Principal Kelby Garner. “We are incredibly grateful for the hard work Dr. Barnes has put into making the program a success here at MNPS Virtual School. Project Lit brings students together where all can make connections to literacy as well as other students.”

The final book club meeting will be on April 11, 2019. Students are currently reading our fourth must read title, “Dear Martin” by Nic Stone. Stop by MNPS Virtual School to pick up your copy. Also be sure to join us on April 11th!
